¹⁷ For this reason the Father loves Me, because I ^(A)lay down My life so that I may take it back. ^18 (B)No one has taken it away from Me, but I ^(C)lay it down on My own. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it back. ^(D)This commandment I received from My Father.”

³⁰ So they ^(A)were seeking to arrest Him; and yet no one laid a hand on Him, because His ^(B)hour had not yet come.

²⁰ These words He spoke ^[a]in ^(A)the treasury, as ^(B)He taught in the temple area; and no one arrested Him, because ^(C)His hour had not yet come.

⁹ The ^(A)large crowd of the Jews then learned that He was there; and they came, not on account of Jesus only, but so that they might also see Lazarus, ^(B)whom He raised from the dead. ¹⁰ But the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death also, ¹¹ because ^(C)on account of him ^(D)many of the Jews were going away and were believing in Jesus.

¹² He who is a hired hand, and not a ^(A)shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf snatches them and scatters the flock. ¹³ He flees because he is a hired hand and does not care about the sheep. ^14 (B)I am the good shepherd, and ^(C)I know My own, and My own know Me, ¹⁵ just as ^(D)the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and ^(E)I lay down My life for the sheep.

^37 (A)Everything that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I certainly will not cast out. ³⁸ For ^(B)I have come down from heaven, ^(C)not to do My own will, but ^(D)the will of Him who ^(E)sent Me. ³⁹ And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that of ^(F)everything that He has given Me I will ^(G)lose nothing, but will ^(H)raise it up on the last day. ⁴⁰ For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who ^(I)sees the Son and ^(J)believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will ^(K)raise him up on the last day.”

Jesus Foretells His Death

²⁷ “^(A)Now My soul has become troubled; and what am I to say? ‘^(B)Father, save Me from ^(C)this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour.
